Benny Bing is a contemporary Canadian artist who explores themes of identity, gender, and blackness. Being born and raised in Nigeria, Bing has always drawn influence from the pride and beauty in his cultural upbringing. This included paying homage to the matriarchal family structure he came from and can be seen in his art as it focuses on uplifting black femininity while also speaking to gender equality and identity.
Bing’s work can be seen in many permanent collections globally and has also been featured in notable institutional exhibits such as Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms, held at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts. Currently, he operates out of his Toronto-based studio and serves on the Board of Directors for Artscape, a not-for-profit charitable organization.
